Catching insects

i went to a forest to catch insects with my 7-year-old son.
He's very interested in insects, for example... beetles, stag beetles, cicadas(locusts ? in the States...i'm not sure..).
i guess, the reason why he likes insects, is that a popular cartoon for children has made an impact on him recently. The cartoon called "MUSHI-KING" in Japanese.
He actually wanted to catch beetles today. But we couldn't find out any beetles.
However, we found out a cicada on a tree. We catch it right away.
This is all we could do...
in my opinion, the result isn't important. i think going through the process is really important for him.

In the U.S. children like to catch insects called "lightening bugs." Do you have these in Japan? they are small bugs which light up at night time (but only the summer). they are very neat to watch on a quiet evening.

When i was a Windows programmer, so many bugs had frightened me. :-)

We called these "mushi tori" in Japanese. "mushi" means "bugs", "tori"
means "catching".
We don't use any words like "lightening" when we do "lightening bugs."

i made a mistake.
"lightening bugs" - it called "HOTARU" in Japanese.
i guessed "lightening bugs" is another word of "catching insects".
